J Ll Leach’s founder, James Leach (Pictured Above) arrived in North Staffordshire in the 1890’s when the families opencast mine in Lancashire was worked out. His father, John Leach, bought a marlhole and mine in Goldenhill to the north of the city, and after spending some time working in Canada as a Mining Engineer he later opened the Wagon Repair Company, at the opposite end of Etruscan Street from our present site.

James Leach, also a Mining Engineer, worked at Silverdale Colliery as well as the family firm in Goldenhill before setting up a consulting business in 1938 concentrating on the many private mines in the area and also supplying associated products to them. After the Nationalisation of the Mines in 1948 , the company needed to diversify in order to service other locally based industries, this accelerated after 1950 when his youngest son Philip who died in 2001 joined him.

 In 1958, new premises were purchased in Hassel Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme and staff numbers increased with the growing business. Our present Managing Director, David Moss, joined the company in 1968 to help expand the sales of fluid power equipment, for which he had built up a good reputation, and to expand into the compressed air marketplace.

 1970 saw a move to much larger premises off Broad Street in Hanley to meet the increased need for extra workshop space do deal with the expanding service side of the Company and for a larger Stores area.

 Growing demand for our services in Shropshire, Mid Wales and North Wales led to a Depot being established in Harlscott, Shrewsbury, in 1982, which has successfully expanded our business in that area.

 Growing diversification together with greater staff numbers, to deal with an increase in business levels, led to the need, in the late 1980,s to purchase our present site in Etruscan Street, Etruria close to the A500, A50 and M6 where purpose built Offices, Stores and Service Centre combined to ensure a first class service to our clients with good working conditions for our all our staff.

25, 2009 --- Festo has announced that fluid power specialist J. Ll. Leach has won its prestigious 'Premier Stockist of the Year' award for outstanding performance in 2008. The award is presented to the company within the Festo Premier Stockist network that shows the best sales growth of Festo products for the year, combined with demonstrable gains in operational efficiency - evidenced by over 80% usage of the Festo on-line shop - and the highest level of commitment to strategic campaigns.

The award was presented to David Moss, Managing Director of J. Ll. Leach, by Stuart Gittins, Festo's REU Team Sales Manager. Also present were Jeff Batey, Lisa Hunt, Alison Jones, Jayne Bailes, Mark Hemmings and Chris MacPhail of J. Ll. Leach, and Eliza Rawlings and Andrew MacPherson of Festo.

According to David Moss, Managing Director of J. Ll. Leach, "This is a wonderful acknowledgement by Festo of our partnership and highlights J. Ll. Leach's commitment to technology and 
customer service. We have been able to achieve outstanding sales growth primarily through the technical competence of our highly trained staff - both at our sales depots in Stoke-on-Trent and Shrewsbury, and in the field - and in their ability to respond quickly to customers' needs. This award complements a good year after completing a contract worth £1 Million in Egypt, to supply a 400 kW compressed air system, along with two 10 ton steam boilers to a food processing plant. This contract was won after similar systems - each worth £2 Million - were supplied to factories in the Middle East in 1994 and 2003. While many stockists simply sell boxes, our team focuses on selling complete solutions. We are able to design, specify, supply, build and install both mechanical and electrical systems, which can then be maintained from our stores, controls, project and service divisions."

Leach has achieved exceptional year-on-year sales growth, principally by providing an exceptional level of service to its customers in the Stoke-on-Trent and Shrewsbury areas. Each stockist has direct access to the Festo European warehousing facilities, enabling them to offer customers next-day delivery of virtually any pneumatic component, from a range of over 23,000 products.
